I start by cutting back the corners and form the shape of the top of the box, aiming for a smooth curve from end to end with no flat spots at the edge of the blank.

Once I have the shape I want I start to excavate material in the middle to form the cavity of the box. On this one I had not gotten very far when I started to notice an odd noise and I could feel something bumping on my gouge.
