Now I need to figure out a way to mount the lid to allow finish turning the underside without marring the finished top side. I chose to mount some fresh pieces of wood to my Oneway Flat Jaws to allow turning custom jaws. I grabbed a piece of 2x6 and cut 4 squares, then screwed them to the chuck jaws. I then mounted the chuck on the lathe and dressed the face of the wooden squares flat. I also knocked off the corners.

I now opened the chuck jaws a bit so I would have some adjustment. I set a pair of dividers to the diameter of the lid and scribed a circle on the jaw faces. I then excavated material from inside the scribed lines, leaving a rabbet for the lid rim. I cut away enough material from inside the scribed line so the lid would be gripped only by its rim.
