An alternative to the jam chuck is another type of friction chuck.  Mine is a melamine disk mounted on a faceplate and faced with a self adhesive foam sheet.

The rim of the bowl can be pressed against the disk by the tailstock and the foam provides plenty of grip to drive it without marring it.  The drawback is that with a disk this big it can get in the way while trying to blend in the curves and sand the bowl.
