I then sanded the bowl, cut a couple of decorative grooves in the base, and applied and buffed out the finish.

With the bowl almost complete I used a detail gouge to undercut the tenon as far as possible to minimize the amount of paring and sanding needed once it is off the lathe.

At this point the bowl can be removed from the lathe, the tenon sawed off, and the remaining stub pared off with a bench chisel. A little sanding will remove all trace of it.
